"אני ה' רופאיך"
בדמדומי חמה של פסח, אני מוצא את עצמי עם מחשבות על העבר בכדי להביט לעתיד. אני מסתכל על התקופה היפה שחוזרת אלינו כמתנה שנתית, עם הכוח העוזר לנו לעלות דרגות בחיים.
הדרגה הבאה ממש בקצה הגבול לפנינו. בשבת שעברה בקשנו בתפילתנו ברכה לחודש הבא, ברכת החודש לחודש אייר, הבא עלינו לטובה בימי רביעי וחמישי הקרוב. חודש אייר הוא זמן לתיקונים, כדי להכין אותנו לקבל את התורה, כל שנה ושנה לקבל אותה מחדש, בשמחה מבפנים ומבחוץ.
כל שנה בסוף החורף לקראת אביב, אנחנו חוגגים ט"ו בשבט, יום ההולדת של אילנות ארץ ישראל. כולנו יודעים שלגדל עץ חייבים קודם כל לזרוע זרע באדמה. לזרע אין ברירה.הוא חייב קודם כל להירקב כדי לזכות ללידה חדשה ולחיים חדשים כבריאה חדשה.
החוויה השנתית של זריעה תמיד ממשיכה לחודש אדר. בחודש הזה יש לנו עוד בטחון, שה' שומר עלינו עם ריכוז מיוחד של כוחות רפואיים. המלה אדר, החודש שבו חוגגים את פורים, החודש של שמחה, עשוי מהאותיות א.ד.ר., ראשי תיבות לביטוי,"אני ד' רופאיך."
ועם הרגשת הביטחון ,השמחה, הבריאות וההגנה, אנחנו נכנסים לתקופת חג הפסח, שהוא הרגע המיועד לפרוץ גדרים מכל צרותינו. זה הזמן, דווקא בליל הסדר של פסח, כל אחד ואחד חייב ממש "לראות את עצמו כאילו הוא יצא (ויוצא) ממצרים."
עכשיו יום שביעי של פסח, סוף החג, אנחנו מתחברים להנס והרגשת השמחה שיצאה מהורינו, בני ישראל, כשהם עברו בקריעת ים סוף. אנחנו, כמוהם, שרים להקדוש ברוך הוא, מרבים את שמחתינו ומבטאים זאת בשירה ובזמרה , לשמחתנו אין גבול ,אין סוף. אז אנחנו ממש יודעים שיצאנו. אנחנו עוד לא משועבדים לבני אדם.
כשקוראים את פרשת,"אז ישיר" בתורה, מבחינים שהפרשה מסתיימת עם הפסוק, " כל המחלה אשר שמתי במצרים לא אשים אליך כי, אני ה' רופאיך." אולי כדאי לנו לציין שכאן השם של הקב"ה מאוית עם שני אותיות "י" בין ה "אלף" וה "ריש" כמו במלה חודש "אייר."
אז אנחנו יוצאים מפסח ונכנסים אל המדבר שוב לקבל את התורה הקדושה מחדש. אנחנו מרגישים בבטבדמדומי חמה של פסח, אני מוצא את עצמי עם מחשבות על העבר בכדי להביט לעתיד. אני מסתכל על התקופה היפה שחוזרת אלינו כמתנה שנתית עם כוח העוזר לנו לעלות דרגות בחיים.

בחודש אייר אנחנו מכוונים יום יום לספור הימים עם מבט למעלה, מיום א' עד יום מ"ט, ספירה עם המון ציפיות והתלהבות.אנו מעריכים את מידותינו והנהגתנו האישית והחברתית לאורך כל הדרך.
אז בליל שבועות אנחנו מתאספים, בריאים, שלמים ומלאי ענווה עם ההבנה שאנחנו ממש מוכנים לצאת ,יחד כאחד.

In The Afterglow of Pesach
"Ani Hashem Rofecha -I am God Your Healer"
In the afterglow of Pesach, I find myself thinking back in an effort to look forward. I am looking back on this beautiful period which is presented to us year after year, an annual gift to help us get to the next level in life.
Our next level is coming up.This past Shabbat we asked for blessings for the coming month of Iyar.It ,among other things, is a time of great fixing in preparation to each year receive the Torah anew, with great joy and inner connection.
Each year in late winter /early spring we celebrate Tu B'shvat, the birthday of our trees. Everyone knows that in order for a tree to grow you need to plant a seed in the ground. That seed has no choice. It must rot in order for it to have a rebirth and grow into a new creation.
That annual experience of "planting seeds" is always followed by the Jewish calendar month of Adar. In that month we have an added aspect of security in the belief that Hashem is watching over us with a special concentration of healing power.
Adar, the month of Purim, the month of joy, is spelled Alef /Daled /Resh, which is an acronym for:
Ani (Alef)
Hashem (Daled ,one of the abbreviations for God's name)
Roefecha (Resh)
translated, "I am God your healer."
It is with this secure feeling of joy, protection and healing that we move into Pesach, a time to break out of all of our troubles.The time where each and very one of us must experience the seder night, the first night of Pesach, as if he/she is mamash going out of Mitzrayim right now.
The seventh day of Pesach is when we reenact the splitting of the Red Sea, singing with great joy to Hashem , increasing our feeling of joy with the expression of song, a joy which knows no bounds.
This is the real experience of finally knowing that we are out. We are no longer slaves to a human being.
When we read the experience that our ancestors went through at the splitting of the Red Sea, it is important to notice how this chapter in the Torah ends. The concluding verse reads,
Kol Hamachalah asher samti B'mitzrayim lo asim alecha , all of the illnesses which I placed on Mitzrayim I will not place on you
Ki, becuase
Ani Hahsem Rofecha I am God your healer
So as we leave Pesach and enter the dessert on our way to once again, receive the Holy Torah. We have the strengthened secure feeling to believe and know that as we are fixing ourselves during this 7 week period of time, we are protected by the healing power of Hashem. During this spring month of "Iyar," we are directed through this day by day journey to count up with great anticipation , fixing
assessing our individual and collective spiritual character traits along the way.
On Shavuot day, we can come together, healed, whole and humbled knowing that we are truly ready to go out and be complete as one.

הרב והזמר החסידי המפורסם, משה שור, כתב הרבה ניגונים נפלאים בשבילו וללהקת התפוצות, וביניהם: עבדו את ה' בשמחה, הפכת מספדי, גלה
הרבה פעמים זכיתי לשיר את ניגונו "הנה לא ינום". כל פעם ששרתי אותו ראיתי בעין השלישית תמונה של עם ישראל יוצאים ממצרים באמצע, או יותר נכון, בחצי הלילה.
אז יום אחד כשישבתי עם חברי רואי לוי משוטי הנבואה, ולמדנו על העניין מההגדה "שבכל דור ודור חייב אדם לראות את עצמו כאילו הוא יצא ממצרים", אמרתי לרואי, בוא נכתוב מלל על היציאה שלנו .
מיד זכינו לתמונה הבאה: עמוד האש לפנינו , עשן מאחורינו
מעבדות יצאנו , החרות מצאנו
לילה זה לנו הפסח, לילה זה לנו לנצח
כך נזכור , כל דור ודור
אני מברך את כולנו לזהות ולהבין את "המצרים" האישי ועממי שלנו היום ולהחליט סוף סוף "אני יוצא! די לשעיבוד שלי!" אני רק רוצה להתחייב שנאסוף יחד ,בואו נתאחד, לכבד ולאהוב אחד לשני ולמלא באופן הכי עמוק את מצוות התורה של "ואהבת לרעך כמוך, אני ה'"

Rabbi Moshe Shur has written some awesome niggunim over the years for himself and The Diaspora Yeshiva Band:
Ivdu Et Hahsem B'simchah, Hafachta, and Galei to name a few .
I would often sing his great Niggun ( Melody) which he called Hiney Lo Yanum. Every time I sang it I had the feeling that I was seeing the Jewish people. Mystically sneaking out of Mitzrayim( we call it Egypt) in the middle of the night. It just had that vibe for me.
So one day, when learning about getting out of Mitrzayim( as it is written in the Hagaddah, everyone needs to see themselves as if he/she is going out right now) with my friend Roi Levy ( Shotie Hanevua) I said, let's write some lyrics about that story. Going out. We are going out right now!
Immediately we had this great picture
Amud Haesh L'fanenu – The pillar of fire in front of us leading our way
Ashan Me'achoreinu - The smoke following our trail
Me'avdut Yatzanu - We went out of slavery
Ha'cherut Matzanu - We found true spiritual and physical freedom
Layla zeh Lanu Hapesach – On this night we have Pesach
Layla Zeh Lanu lanetzach – On this night for ever and ever
Kach nizkor Kol Dor Vador- This is the way we will remember it for generation after generation
May we all be blessed to identify and understand our individual personal Mitzrayim( constraints) and our collective ones and be blessed to finally decide this year

רצועה # 12 ברכת כהנים

בשנת 1989 הבעל הבית שלי, מיכאל הכהן קפלן ז"ל, נתן לי אתגר "אתה חושב שאתה יודע משהו לגבי מוזיקה יהודית? אם כן, מה המקור של המנגינה שהכהנים שרים בחו"ל בתוך ברכת הכהנים?" לא היה לי שום מושג.
"תן לי לספר לך, כשהייתי נער בסביבות שנת 1910, ברחתי מהצבא הרוסי ומצאתי את עצמי ביער, חצי מת. תלמיד של החפץ חיים, הרב ישראל מאיר הכהן, מצא אותי ולקח אותי הביתה, אז הפכתי להיות תלמיד של החכם הגדול ההוא.
יום אחד אחרי ברכת כהנים, החפץ חיים מסר לי דבר שהעבירו אותו מדור לדור במשפחות הכהנים. ומהו? שהמנגינה שהכהנים בחו"ל שרים כשהם מברכים את הקהל היא בדיוק אותה המנגינה ששרו בבית המקדש בירושלים לפני אלפים שנה."
מהרגע ששמעתי את הסיפור, התחלתי לשיר את המנגינה ככלי למדיטאציה כדי להרגיש את העכשוויות של ההיסטוריה של עם ישראל.
מאותו החכם, החפץ חיים, למדנו הרבה על הענין לשמור על כל מלה ומלה שיוצאת מהפה, לדעת מתי לדבר ומתי לשתוק. בפרשת השבוע בתורה אנחנו קוראים ולומדים על המות הקטלני של שני בני אהרון הכהן,נדב ואביהו.
אחרי פטירתם, כשמשה רבינו מסר את החדשות לאחיו אהרון הכהן, התגובה של אהרון הייתה שתיקה. כתוב בתורה,"וידום אהרון."
אני זוכר שרבי שלמה קרליבך זצ"ל לימד אותי שלפעמים התגובה הכי נכונה היא לשתוק. לפעמים מישהו צועק עלי ונותן לי בקורת ואני מרגיש שהוא לא יפסיק, בסדר, אני יודע שהוא מטומטם ולא יודע על מה הוא מדבר, ובכל אופן מה אני צריך לעשות? לשתוק! למה? אני יכול להשתיק אותו מיד ,אבל אם כן יכול להיות שאפספס הדבר היחיד שהוא יגיד שבדיוק הייתי חייב לשמוע.
אז חברה, אני מברך את כולנו להיות מקשיבים מצוינים ולהקשיב כל כך טוב ורציני כשאתה מדבר אלי אני מקשיב ומאזין כאילו אין בן אדם אחר בעולם כרגע.רק אתה!

In 1989 my then landlord, a kohen himself, Mr. Michael Kaplan of blessed memory, challenged my knowledge of Jewish music. "Where do you think that hymn that you sing on the holidays, when blessing the congregation with the Priestly blessing, comes from? Do you know the source? "
I had no idea. "Let me tell you a story," he said.
"When I was a young man, in the 1910's, I was running away from the Russian army and was found in the forest, half dead, by a student of the Chofetz Chaim, Rabbi Yisrael Meir Hakohen. They graciously took me in and I became a student of this great scholar and sage.
One day after Birkat Kohanim, the Preistly Blessing , The Chofetz Chaim shared with me that a teaching was passed on from generation to generation in his family of kohanim, testifying that this exact melody was chanted in the Beit Hamikdash, The Holy Temple in Jerusalem, 2000 years ago!"
As soon as I heard that story, I began singing that melody all over the world as a meditative tool used to envision Jewish history coming alive today.
This same great sage, The Chofetz Chaim, also taught us to be very clear when to speak and when to be silent. In this week's Torah portion, "Shemini," we learn about the story of the tragic death of Aharon Hakohen's two oldest sons ,Nadav and Avihu.
When Moshe was sent to tell his brother Aharon, the shocking news, Aharon's response was one of total silence. "Vayidom Aharon," the Torah reads.
I can remember Reb Shlomo,zt"l teaching me that sometimes the best reaction is to say nothing. How many times does someone "take off" on me, criticizing me as if it will never end? Ok, I know that he is totally off and is not making any sense. So what is the best thing to do? Be quiet! You know I could shut him up after a minute, but if I do, perhaps I will miss the one thing that was going to be said to me that I really needed to here.
So friends , I bless us all to be great listeners; to listen on the level that when you are speaking to me I am listening to you as if there is no one else in the world right now.

In 1989 my then landlord, a kohen himself, Mr. Michael Kaplan of blessed memory, challenged my knowledge of Jewish music. "Where do you think that hymn that you sing on the holidays, when blessing the congregation with the Priestly blessing, comes from? Do you know the source? "
I had no idea. "Let me tell you a story," he said.
"When I was a young man, in the 1910's, I was running away from the Russian army and was found in the forest, half dead, by a student of the Chofetz Chaim, Rabbi Yisrael Meir Hakohen. They graciously took me in and I became a student of this great scholar and sage.

שבת המלכה רצועה #7

שבת. בערך זה מה שנשאר לנו, חוץ מארץ ישראל, שנותן לנו את הכח להתחבר לקדושת עליון.יש לנו יום אחד בשבוע שנותן לנו את הגז לכל השבוע שלפנינו.
כשבוב הביא לי את המנגינה ההוא ,הוא היה רגיל לשיר אותו בקצב מהר למילים של לכה דודי התפלה מקבלת שבת שמלוה את שבת המלכה בתוכינו
.אבל מפני משהוא, אני שמעתי מנגינה הרבה יותר בכיוון מדיטציה וטראנסי.ולכן הוספתי את הצ'נט באמצע השיר מיד אחרי הפזמון השני בתקוה שהחלק ההוא יתאחד את הקהל בהופעות,שרים עם השאיפה לחוויה יותר גבוה ורוחנית.אחרי זה, הבאתי כל מיני ציתותים על שבת מהקבלה לחברי רואי לוי ובקשתי שהוא יכין מהן שיר.
אתם יודעים שרק בארץ חל שבת לכולם.בחוץ לארץ אתה יכול לצאת מהבית שבת בבוקר, אוסף את העיתון של היום ,ורואה המון אנשים שפשוט ,אין להם שום קשר לשבת.
אבל בארץ ישראל כל קרין ברדיו, בכל יום שישי, מברך כולנו לשבת שלום.סע על כביש 6 ומה כתוב במסך? שבת שלום.יש לי חברים שהולכים לחוף בשבת, אבל הם הולכים בשבת! יש שבת לכל אחד בארץ.
והעיקר היום הוא למצוא את הדרך להתחבר לקדושת שבת.נכון שיש צווים מסוימים שכתוב מפורש בתורת "לשמור " את השבת ולא לחלל אותה עם מלאכה של ימי חול.אבל אתם יודעים שהרמב"ן אומר שבשני לוחות כתוב זכור את יום השבת.העקר הוא להגיע למצב שאנחנו עולים דרגה בשבת עם החיבור לקדושת שבת.דרך האוכל, המשפחה,החברים, התפלה והלימודים.כולם חלקים חשובים ממי לקבל קדושת השבת. המתיקות של שבת.
שנזכה, כווווולנו לקבל ולהרגיש את קדושת שבת היום.

Shabbat Hamalkah( The Queen) Track # 7

Shabbat! It is basically the only vehicle we have left , with the exclusion of Eretz Yisrael, which allows us to connect to the Holineess of above. We have one day a week that gives us the fuel for the entire week to come.
When Bob brought me this melody, he had been used to singing it in an up tempo style to the words of the Friday night prayer, L'cha Dodi, which welcomes in the Shabbat Queen. For some reason, I heard the song as more of a meditative trance. So I added the little meditation chant after the 2nd chorus in the hope that it would bring people together at shows , singing and yearning for a higher spiritual experience.
Following, I brought a number of Kabbalistic quotes and descriptions about Shabbat to my good friend Roi Levi and asked him to compose the lyrics.
You know friends that it is only in Israel where we have the phenomenon of Shabbat existence everywhere and for everyone. Outside of Israel, it can be Shabbat in your home, but when you go out to get the Saturday morning newspaper, something changes. It is not Shabbat out there for everyone. Simply put. Most of the people have no connection to Shabbat on Saturday.
However, in Israel, every radio deejay , at some point in their Friday broadcast , will wish you a "Shabbat Shalom". You drive on Highway #6 and above on the road signs you see the message flashing, "Shabbat Shalom."
You know I have friends that go to the beach on Shabbat ,but it is clear that this day for them is special. They are going ON SHABBAT. Everybody in Israel has Shabbat.
The main thing today is to find one's way to connect ot the Holiness of Shabbat. Certainly there are numerous commandments written in the Torah to "Keep and observe the Shabbat" , not to transgress or disgrace the sanctity of the day with weekday "work." However, did you know that the holy scholar the Ramban( Nachmonidies) claims that the words to Remember ( Zachor) the day of Shabbat are written on both of the Holy Tablets. It is critical that we strive to get to a place where we raise ourselves up with the Holiness of Shabbat, connected to this greatness with our meals, family, friends, prayer an study on this day. Each one of these is an integral way to receive and connect to the Holiness of Shabbat, the sweetness of Shabbat.
May we all be blessed to feel this holiness tonight.

איזה מנהג שיש לעם ישראל! כל שבוע,שישי בלילה ליד שולחן השבת המפוארת, ולהבות אש של נרות שבת מאירות את ביתינו עם שלום ואהבה.
כולנו מברכים אחד את השני, מקבלים את מלאכי השלום מלאכי עליון, ומותחים את הקו בין ימי חול לקדושת שבת, ומתכוננים לברך את ילדותינו עם תפילות מיוחדות.
בניננו היקרים, אני מברך אתכם כאפרים ומנשה ,הילדים של יוסף הצדיק, כמו שהם קבלו את הברכה מיעקב אבינו ע"ה.
ואני מברך כל בנותי היפות שלי להיות כמו אימנו שרה, רבקה, רחל, ולאה.
ושבח לאל, לי יש את הזכות שהקב"ה הביא לי שבע בנות, בלי עין הרע, שמגיע להם ברכות כל יום ויום. כל אחת עם אהבה והמדות והאופי המיוחדות שלה.

What an awesome tradition and practice that we have among the Jewish people!
Every week on Friday night at the beautiful Shabbat table, the flames of the Shabbat candles lighting up our home's with peace and love.
We bless each other, welcome in our accompanying angels, draw the line between weekday and sanctity and get ready to bless our children with special prayers.
May you, my sons, be blessed like the sons of Yosef Hatzaddik, Efraim and Menashe, as they were blessed by our forefather Jacob, of blessed memory.
And may all my beautiful daughters be blessed to be place right in there with our Mothers, Sarah ,Rivkah, Rachel and Leah.
With so much praise and thanks to Hashem , I have 7 daughters who deserve blessings every day, each one so special with her unique qualities and love.
28 years ago on the day that I stood before Hashem's Torah to offer a name upon the birth of my 2nd daughter Rivkah, we were all blessed to have me receive this melody.
It is the song which I sing every Friday evening at the Shabbat table, with special dedicated thoughts of blessings for all of them.
May Hashem bless you with all of the things that you need and want to make you even more beautifulץ

אני יושב כאן וחושב על קדושת שבת. באו נברך אחד את השני עם חווית קדושת שבת בכל שבוע מחדש וגבוה מאוד.
הרבי שלמה קרליבך, זצ"ל , לימד כל כך הרבה בקשר לקדושת שבת. היה ממש אפשר לראות האור סביבו בכל שבת שזכית לחגוג איתו.כמו כל אור, אפשר להעביר ולמסור אותו בלי לאבד מכוחו. רבי שלמה מסר את האור לאורך כל השבת.
בשבילי זוהי הקדמה טובה להגיד לכם כמה אני מרגיש מבורך שלמדתי "ניגון לואיס" מחברי הטוב ר' שלמה כ"ץ. בראש חודש מנחם אב לפני חמש שנים, הוא הגיע אלינו הביתה במושב בית מאיר והשמיע דיסק עם חמישים ניגונים "חדשים" שרבי שלמה ק. הלחין אבל אף פעם הקליט. איזה יהלומים!
ברגע ששמעתי " ניגון לואיס" ידעתי שמאוד רציתי את הזכות להקליט אותו בקרוב. כל פעם שאני שר אותו, ובמיוחד לסטודנטים בסדנאות "נשימה" למכינות קדם צבאיות, הרגשתי את הקסם של המנגינה ואיך הוא העלה אותנו למקומות גבוהים יותר.
וזכיתי להקליט אותו על הדיסק,"בלעדיך לא אבוא" עם הקולות מדהימות של ירחמיאל זיגלר.

אני יושב כאן וחושב על קדושת שבת. באו נברך אחד את השני עם חווית קדושת שבת בכל שבוע מחדש וגבוה מאוד.
הרבי שלמה קרליבך, זצ"ל , לימד כל כך הרבה בקשר לקדושת שבת. היה ממש אפשר לראות האור סביבו בכל שבת שזכית לחגוג איתו.כמו כל אור, אפשר להעביר ולמסור אותו בלי לאבד מכוחו. רבי שלמה מסר את האור לאורך כל השבת.

Remembering Secrets week #4 Track #6 Nigun Lewis

I am sitting here thinking about the Holiness of Shabbat .Let's bless each other to expereince that Holiness each week in a new and higher way.
Reb Shlomo Carlebach, zt"l taught us so much about the Holiness of Shabbat. You could mamash see him glowing each Shabbat you had the honor you spent with him.Like any light, it is transferred without losing any of it's intensity.
Shlomo was transferring all Shabbat long.
I guess that is an appropriate way to say how blessed I feel to have learned Nigun Lewis from my good freind Reb Shlomo Katz.He came over to our home in Beit Meir , perhaps 5 years ago on Rosh Chodesh Av and played a CD with over 50 "new " songs that Reb Shlom C. had written and never recorded. What gems!
As soon as I heard Nigun Lewis I knew that I would love to be honored to record it.
Over the years of singing Nigun Lewis, especailly for the studetns at Pre Army Israeli Mechinot , one could really feel the magic of it's melody and how you can ride it to a higher plain.
And so, I have been blessed and recorded it on this album, with wonderful backing vocals by Rocky Zeigler.

"Looking for My Brothers" Track # 4

This song was brought to me by my friend Josh Lauffer, a great musician with a beautiful voice and an enormous soul. In one of our A.M.I. (Artists and Musicians for
Israel) Jewish identity workshops Josh sang this beautiful moving song, Et Achai Anochi Mevakesh. I asked him where it came from and he told me that it was composed by students in one of his previous workshops during the summer Nesiah program in Israel. With his permission, I started singing it at concerts and teachings all over the world. The audience reactions were filled with joy and compliments.
The words are so deep. After a conversation with his father, Jacob our forefather, Yosef the Tzaddik goes to search for his brothers. His brothers who hated him for his dreams and preferential treatment. Why was he looking for them? He understood that the Divine plan for The Nation of Israel could not be complete without them. When he meets a shepherd in the fields he answers, "I am SEEKING my brothers" .He was not simply looking for them in the physical sense. It was extremely important to him to find his brothers and make peace with them.
So what happened? The Torah continues, "And they saw him from a distance …. And they plotted to kill him." So many times I have asked myself , students and friends the following, " So your brother or sister can be annoying at tines, would you ever GOD forbid think of harming them ( I can't even get the absolute words out of my mouth) in such a devastating manner? Of course not!"
Yet, Yosef's brothers saw him and were prepared to kill him. The Talmud tells us that they set up a judicial and decreed the death sentence upon him.
How is that possible? The great sage and commentary the Ramban ( Nachmanodies) explains that the answer is written in the actual text of the Torah. "They saw him FROM FAR AWAY". Had they been able to see him from close up. Had they invested what it takes to understood where he was coming from. Had they given him the respect5 that perhaps his ideas, though they whole heartedly disagreed with them, might have some virtue, then certainly they would have never been able to think of killing their brother.
May we all be blessed to take that extra step to understand someone else, someone who we think is different than we are; to listen and think that perhaps there is some value to a different point of view.

את אחי אנוכי מבקש" רצועה # 4

השיר הגיע אלי מחברי ג'וש לאופר,מוזיקאי עם קול נפלא ונשמה גדולה. באחד מהסדנאות שלנו בתוכנית נשימה,( העמותה של אומנים שמגישים סדנאות חינוכיות על נושאים יהודיים דרך מוזיקה ואומנות ) ג'וש שר את השיר ואמר לי שהוא הלחין על ידי קבוצה של תלמידים בתוכנית קיץ בארץ שנקרא "נסיעה."
התחלתי לשיר אותו בכל העולם ותגובות היו מלאות שמחה ומחמאות.
המילים כל כך עמוקות.אחרי שיחה עם אביו,יעקב אבינו, יוסף הצדיק יוצא לחפש את אחיו, האחים שהוא ידע ששנאו אותו. למה: הוא הבין שהתוכנית האלוקית לעם ישראל לא יכול להיות בלעדם. כשהוא פוגש הרועה צאן בשדה הוא עונה לו,"את אחי אנוכי מבקש." הוא לא סתם מחפש אותם.הוא מבקש! זה מאוד חשוב לו למצוא את אחיו ולעשות איתם שלום.
אז מה קרה! התורה ממשיכה, " ויראו אותו מרחוק ....ויתנכלו להמיתו." הרבה פעמים שאלתי לעצמי ולאחרים." לפעמים האח או אחות מפריע לכם ? הם יכולים להיות ממש נודניקים! אבל חס וחלילה חשבת לעשות ( המילה קשה מידי לכתוב) משהו כל כך חמור? בטח שלא."
אבל האחים של יוסף ראו אותו והיו מוכנים להרוג אותו.הגמרא אומרת שהם הקימו בית דין ופסקו עליו דין מוות.
איך זה יכול להיות.אומר הרמב"ן שהתשובה כתובה במילים של הפסוק." ויראו אותו מרחוק." לו הם היו יכולים לראות אותו מקרוב. לו הם השקיעו בו קצת להבין אותו מאיפה שהוא היה עומד.לו הם נתנו לו הכבוד שאולי יש משהו לדעותיו, אפילו אם הם לא מסכימים, בטח שהם לא היו יכולים לחשוב לדקה שהוא ראוי למות.
אני מברך את כולנו לקחת את הצעד הנוסף כדי להבין את האחר, להקשיב ולחשוב שאולי יש ערך לדעות שונות ממני.

Remembering Secrets week #2
Not Without You -(Biladecha Lo Avo) Track #1

I remember sitting in the living room of Roi and Osnat Levi, one fall morning two years ago. There Roi , Gilad Vital and myself sat together for the first time. One month prior we had played music together on a celebratory Sukkot Festival stage in Moshav Beit Meir with our friend Eldad Levi, leader of the ethnic band, Maasalah.
Upon leaving the stage we immediately realized that "b'ezrat Hashem", we got something going together.
So on that fall morning, in the beautiful town of Katzir, we sat, drank coffee and talked about the world's condition . We all agreed that each of us needs to take part in fixing the world and this could only happen if we did it together.
We started studying together a beautiful word of Torah from the teachings of the 16th century kabbalist, the Maharal from Prague. In his book,
"The Strength's of God", he teaches that two opposites complete a whole, which is then considered everything , with nothing missing. All there is are one specific thing and it's opposite, to the exclusion of anything else.
And this is what we mean by togetherness and unity. That we are not united until we are all in the circle together. And when is the circle fully complete? When it is One. Hence the philosophical mathematical equation , 1+1=1.
On that morning I witnessed with wonder the ability of one man, his talent and self confidecne under the spiritual influence of life, entering a world where words would instantly dance together in front of our eyes.
Welcome to the lyrical world of poet Roi Levi.The words flow with style from his heart.
He internalized the teaching of the Maharal and molded them into the form of a song. Awesome! What an honor to sit with him in that moment.
So as the song goes, where were we on the Sinai shores or at the foot of Mount Sinai? Either way, we were together like one heart. Feet dancing to the heavens!
One family, committing beyond the shadow of a doubt, to be together forever.
There is no doubt that we've got something special going between us. That too must remain forever.

אני זוכר שבחודש )רם( חשון, תשס"ט ישבנו בבית של רואי ואסנת לוי. זאת אומרת רואי, גלעד ויטל, ואני. זאת היית הפעם הראשונה שהתאספנו יחד.חודש לפני, נגנו יחד על במת חגיגת סוכות במושב בית מאיר עם חברינו אלדד לוי מלהקת "מסעלה".
מיד הכרנו שבע"ה "יש לנו מה לעשות יחד."
אז בבוקר ההוא ,בישוב קציר,ישבנו, שתינו קפה ודברנו על מצב העולם. הסכמנו שכולנו חייבים לקחת חלק בתיקון העולם. וזה יכול לקרוא רק ביחד.
למדנו יחד את התורה מהמהר"ל מפרג, מספרו,"גבורות השם",(לגבי הענין- וידוע כי ידיעת ההפכים אחד) " ששני הפכים משלימים להיות הכל, בלי חסרון.שהרי יש כאן דבר והיפוכו,ואין עוד דבר חסר. וזהו ענין האחדות.שאין לענין האחדות, רק שהוא הכל,ואין חוץ ממנו.......... לפי מישהו אחד, משלים את הכל." אז הפורמולה הפילוסופית המתמטית, 1+1=1.
ובאותו הבוקר הייתי מופלא איך בן אדם עם הביטחון עצמי והכישרון מושפעה מאוירה הרוחנית, יכול להכנס לעולם שמתחבר מלים שרוקדות לפניך.
ברוכים הבאים לעולם של רואי לוי, התמלילן הפייטן ,שממנו המלים שופכות באופי מליבו.
הוא לקח פנימה את דברי המהר"ל וגיבש אותם בצורה של שיר. מדהים! זכותי לשבת באותו החדר.

Rememebring Secrets- Thoughts on The New Disc Part 1

"Secrets Remebered"
Every time an artist releases a new disc, album or as I stillike to call it, a new record, friends tend to ask, " Why did you chose to record those songs? What is the real meaning behind those lyrics? What were your influences? Which song do you like the most? "
It seems to me that this blog can be a good forum, not simply for me to answer those questions ,but for me to hear your ideas and for you to discuss among yourselves, like friends sitting in the living room, sharing different ideas and concepts as they relate to the message of the music.
So every week for the next three months, B"H, I am hoping to speak to you about the music which we are releasing on the new record, "Not Without You."
OK. So let's get started .I thought I would begin with track #5, Hodu, which was added at the end of our sessions and turned out to be the first single that we released. A few days after mailing the clip to Gilad, I found myself writing a new "chant" part to the song "והודו לזכר קדשו."
Driving to White Studios up north in Katzir, I heard a report that the Petach Tikvah religious schools would not allow Ethiopian children to study in their schools. I was so saddened to hear that news. By the time I reached the studio , Gilad had come up with a new groove, an initial arrangement and we were ready to record a new skitz,
But the first thing that he asked me upon my arrival ( I guess he had heard the same report) was' "OK what are you going to do. Give it to them on the head!" I explained to him that was not my way of responding ,but what a great idea it would be to show the world what beautiful "diamonds" we have in our Ethiopian brothers and sisters.
So I called Bob, who after hearing ht enew groove for the song, had already suggested that we bring in a group of Ethiopian brothers and sisters into the studio to do backup vocals for the song , and I asked what he thought about doing a video clip of the song , starring a group of Ethiopians. His immediate response was," definitely yes!"
After recording the skitz, Gilad turned to bassist, Yaron Soriano, who came in an recorded and arranged all of the instrumentation.
The following day, with Bob present, guiding me through with his personal feelings about the melody, I came in and laid down the vocals. We were now ready to bring in our guest stars.
The video recording experience was amazing. After the first take of the part where Ethiopian actors, Yossi, Benny, Shai and Shmuel entered, strutting down the forest's path, suddenly Bob calls out.
"Ok! Everyone come here!"
I remember Barak the director looking at me with his face saying, " Who is this? What is he doing with my video?"
Bob turned to all of us and began to tell the story of how he had written this powerful song.
Recalling his bout with cancer he said," I was so sick and weak that I could not even walk from my bed to the restroom, I had to crawl! I was so deep in the pits. It was from that place that I called out to God and begged for a healing."
It was then that he turned to our new friends and looked each one of them straight in the eyes and asked, "Have you ever been in the pits?" Knowing well enough what their answers would be. One at a time each one of them respond with a committed, "YES."
"Okay," he said, "then now, dance your way back into this video and show the world the beauty of who you are and how much it means to you to have the honor to be here in Israel."
The rest is all there for you on the clip "Hodu." The final scene was so moving that all of us felt the intense presence of , Kibbutz Galiyot, the most joyus, honest, loving , together" happening ,an ingathering of Jews from all over the world."
So here we are and we can create a new world, a world of love and awe. A world of peace and harmony. All we gotta do is believe. Believe and trust in Hashem and each other. What are we waiting for? Haven’t we all suffered enough, seen others suffer who we really love. Who cares who’s really right in the End as long as we all finally get there.
You know Reb Shlomo taught us that when we get to Gan Eden, nobody is going to ask you“ Hey Brother, Sister how’d you get here?” They’re just going to be happy that your there. We'll all be there, together.
I recently heard a beautiful word from Rav David Fuchs of Bayit V’gan. When God promises us “security “ ”….and you will dwell in The Land securely,” He follows that by immediately saying," And I will give Shalom ( The Name of Hashem, The blessing of Peace ) in The Land.”
So The Holy Ramban and The Holy Or Hachaim both ask," but You already promised us peace in the last verse. Why repeat the promise?
Both great teachers give the same answer. There may be security, but there is no Peace until there is peace among you,”Shalom Beinechem.”
How many times did Reb Shlomo teach us about “The Between".
“It’s Between us and God. It’s Between husbands and wives. Fathers and mothers and their children. It’s between neighbors. It’s between you and me.
So PLEASE!!!!!! All of us!!!!! I never was a General in a war, but I have to believe that any General would say that if he saw the enemy on a distant hill and at the same time, was faced with the imminent threat of immediate attack up front and close, he would have to first deal with the enemy closest to him. It is so much easier for me to think that I can take care of business and change my world by fixing it all from without. The outside world looks so easy to blame. The truth is all of my fixing has to come from within.
Brothers and sisters, our hearts can be our own worst enemy. Let’s please remove any and all hatred that we might GOD forbid still have for each other.
Make peace between us now, show Hashem and each other that we really can and do care about each other, even though we disagree on many issues.

Every time an artist releases a new disc, album or as I stillike to call it, a new record, friends tend to ask, " Why did you chose to record those songs? What is the real meaning behind those lyrics? What were your influences? Which song do you like the most? "
It seems to me that this blog can be a good forum, not simply for me to answer those questions ,but for me to hear your ideas and for you to discuss among yourselves, like friends sitting in the living room, sharing different ideas and concepts as they relate to the message of the music.
So every week for the next three months, B"H, I am hoping to speak to you about the music which we are releasing on the new record, "Not Without You."
OK. So let's get started .I thought I would begin with track #5, Hodu, which was added at the end of our sessions and turned out to be the first single that we released. I first heard this song from my good friend Bob Stark as I was leaving his home in Cleveland in July 2009.Bob sat at his grand piano and sang me , in the style of Frankie Valli and The

בכל פעם שאומן מוציא דיסק, אלבום או "רקורד" ( כמו שאני עדיין אוהב לקרוא ל"פרויקט") חדש
יש חברים שרוצים לדעת :
למה ואיך בחרת בשירים האלה ?
על מה אתה מדבר?
אילו השפעות מהחיים הביאו אותך לסיפור ההוא?
איזה שיר בדיסק אתה הכי אוהב ?
נראה לי שזה יכול להיות פורום מצויין ,לא רק בשבילי לענות על שאלותיכם הנ"ל ,אבל גם לשמוע דעותיכם ותגובותיכם לגבי ההרגשות ורעיונות שאכתוב כאן ,כחבר'ה שיושבים בסלון, נהנים אחד מהשני,לומדים אחד מהשני , וחולקים דיעות שונות ממקום של אהבה ומשפחה.
אז בכל שבוע, בעזרת השם, בשלושת החדשים הקרובים, אני מתכוון לדבר אתכם על יצירת הרקורד( דיסק) החדש, "בלעדיך לא אבוא."
אז בואו נצא לדרך:
השבוע חשבתי להתחיל עם השיר, "הודו", רצועה מספר חמש, שהוספנו אותו בסוף ההקלטות והוא הפך להיות הסינגל הראשון והקליפ המקסים והמרגש שהפיק ברק מריינבו הפקות. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1F0dqkRC6g8&feature=youtube_gdata_player
לראשונה שמעתי את השיר "הודו" מחברי בוב סטארק כשהייתי בדרך מביתו בקליבלנד לשדה התעופה בחודש יולי 2009. הוא ישב ליד הפסנתר ושר את השיר בסטייל פופ מהתחלת שנות השישים,
" למען יזמרך כבוד..."
פשוט ,לא התלהבתי .רציתי לצאת אבל בוב התעקש שאמשיך להאזין.
אז הוא התחיל להסביר לי כמה חשיבות אישית היתה מעורבת בשיר. הוא בקש ממני למצוא כיוון להתחבר למנגינה ולמילים העמוקות.
אז הקלטתי את השיר על MP3 ונסעתי לשדה.
חלפו חודשיים ובוב מתקשר להגיד שהוא בירושלים ורוצה לשמוע איך התקדמתי עם השיר שלנו.
האמת לא התקדמתי בכלל ,ואשמח להפגש . נסיתי כל מיני "גרובים" ושום דבר לא התחבר לי.
פתאום יום אחד קבלתי אי מייל מחבר ונגן כלי הקשה נדב סירלינג. " כשיש לך חמש דקות , תצפה בוידאו קליפ , " בעיניים שלך," של פיטר גבריאל ופאפא וומבא.
ציפיתי בקליפ ומיד שמעתי את המנגינה של "למען יזמרך," רוקד לי בתוך הראש.
ימים אחרי ששלחתי את הקליפ ההוא למפיק גלעד ויטל, מצאתי את עצמי כותב חלק חדש לשיר " והודו לזכר קדשו."
בנסיעה לאולפני לבן בקציר, שמעתי כתבה ברדיו שבבתי ספר דתיים בפתח תקוה סירבו לילדים אתיופיים להרשם ללימודים. הייתי מאוד עצוב . כשהגעתי לאולפן, גלעד היה מוכן עם "גרוב" חדש והיינו מוכנים להקליט סקיצה לשיר.אבל קודם כל הוא שאל אותי,"מה תעשה בענין של הילדים האתיופיים בפ"ת?תן להם על הראש!"
הסברתי לו שזו לא דרכי, אבל בוא נמצא דרך להראות לעולם איזה יהלומים יש לנו.בוב כבר אמר לי שהוא רוצה להביא זמרים אתיופיים לשיר קולות ועכשיו אני רציתי לצלם קליפ איתם. התקשרתי אליו ומיד הוא הסכים.
בענין ההקלטה, גלעד פנה לבסיסט יורן סורינו להקליט ולעבד את כל המוזיקה לשיר החדש "הודו." ביום שאחרי, בוב באה איתי לאולפן לכוון אותי בשירה. עכשיו היינו מוכנים להביא את האורחים הכוכבים שלנו.
החוויה של הקלטת הקליפ. אחרי הטייק הראשון של השחקנים האתיופיים,יוסי, בני, שי ושמואל, בוב פתאום צעק לכולם, "אוקי כולכם אלי!" הבמאי, ברק הסתכל עלי וראיתי על פרצופו," מי זה ומה הוא עושה עם הקליפ שלי?"
בוב התחיל לספר לכולנו איך הוא הלחין את השיר. הוא דיבר על מאבקו עם סרטן ואמר," הייתי כל כך חולה וחלש.לא הייתי יכול ללכת מהמיטה לשירותים.זחלתי.הרגשתי תקוע בבור של ייאוש. צעקתי לאלוהים והתחננתי לרפואה.
אז הוא פנה לחברים החדשים,הביט לעניהם ושאל," היית פעם בבור של ייאוש?" אחד אחד כולם ענו תשובה חייובית.
"אוקי,אז תרקדו בקליפ ותראו לעולם את היופי שלכם וכמה חשוב לכם הזכות לחיות בארץ.
אפשור לראות את ההתלהבות של כולנו,רוקדים עם הרגשת קיבוץ גליות , מלאים בשמחה אמיתית ,אהבה, וחווית "ביחד" עם יהודים מכל פינות העולם.
אז הנה כולנו יכולים ליצר עולם חדש, מלא אהבה ואמונה. עולם של שלום והרמוניה. רק צריכים להאמין .להאמין באלוהים ובמיוחד להאמין בינינו אחד בשני. למה אנחנו מחכים?לא סבלנו מספיק? לא ראינו את אהובינו סובלים? מה אכפת לי מי צודק? שרק נגיע לאמונה הזאת כבר.
למדנו מרבי שלמה קרליבך זצ"ל ,כשנגיע לגן עדן אף אחד לא ישאל אותך "הי אחי אחותי, איך הגעת לכאן? כולם רק יהיו שמחים שהגענו. שם נהיה ביחד.
שמעתי מפי רבי, הרב דוד פוקס מבית וגן. כתוב בפרשת בחוקותי בסוף ספר ויקרא, והשם מבטיח לנו ביטחון בפסוק,"וישבתם בארץ לבטח." ומיד אחרי כתוב,"ונתתי שלום בארץ."
אז הרמב"ן הקדוש ואור החיים הקדוש,שני פירושים שבדרך כלל שונים אחד מהשני שואלים אותה השאלה. אם כבר הבטחת לנו להיות מובטח ,למה חזרת עליו בפסוק ונתתי שלום בארץ? ושניהם עונים את אותה התשובה.יכול להיות שאני יביא לכם ביטחון אבל שלום,אומר הקדוש ברוך הוא,תלוי בכם. אתם חייבים לעשות שלום ביניכם.
כמה וכמה פעמים רבי שלמה לימד אותנו על הענין "ביניכם." ביני ונין בני ישראל,בין איש לאשתו, בין הורים לילדים,בין שכנים .ביני לבינך.
אז בבקשה! כולנו!תראו.אף פעם לא הייתי גנרל במלחמה, אבל אני מתאר לעצמי שכל גנרל שרואה שני מצבים, האויב שעומד בגבעה במרחק,ובאותו הרגע עומד לקרות התקפה מעמדה קרובה, קודם כל הגנרל חייב לטפל באיום הכי קרוב אליו.
כל כך פשוט לי לחשוב שאפשר לסדר החיים ולתקן הכל מבחוץ. כל כך פשוט לי להאשים את מה שמבחוץ.אבל האמת היא שאני חייב לתקן מבפנים.
אחים ואחיות יקרים, הלב שלי יכול להיות האויב הכי מסוכן שלי.בואו נסיר את כל השנאה מליבנו שחס ושלום יש לנו אחד מול השני. בא נעשה שלום בינינו, ונראה לבורא העולם שאיכפת לנו למרות שיש לנו המון דעות שונות.
אני רוצה לברך אותנו,מהמקום הקטן שלי, עם הכוח,השאיפה, והרצון רק לאהוב אחד את השני ולהיות מוכנים לקבל מתנות מדהימות, אור ושמחה מהקדוש ברוך הוא ואחד מהשני.

אז הנה כולנו יכולים ליצר עולם חדש, מלא אהבה ואמונה. עולם של שלום והרמוניה. רק צריכים להאמין .להאמין באלוהים ובמיוחד להאמין בינינו אחד בשני. למה אנחנו מחכים?לא סבלנו מספיק? לא ראינו את אהובינו סובלים? מה אכפת לי מי צודק? שרק נגיע לאמונה הזאת כבר.
למדנו מרבי שלמה קרליבך זצ"ל ,כשנגיע לגן עדן אף אחד לא ישאל אותך "הי אחי אחותי, איך הגעת לכאן? כולם רק יהיו שמחים שהגענו. שם נהיה ביחד.
שמעתי מפי רבי, הרב דוד פוקס מבית וגן. כתוב בפרשת בחוקותי בסוף ספר ויקרא, והשם מבטיח לנו ביטחון בפסוק,"וישבתם בארץ לבטח." ומיד אחרי כתוב,"ונתתי שלום בארץ."
אז הרמב"ן הקדוש ואור החיים הקדוש,שני פירושים שבדרך כלל שונים אחד מהשני שואלים אותה השאלה. אם כבר הבטחת לנו להיות מובטח ,למה חזרת עליו בפסוק ונתתי שלום בארץ? ושניהם עונים את אותה התשובה.יכול להיות שאני יביא לכם ביטחון אבל שלום,אומר הקדוש ברוך הוא,תלוי בכם. אתם חייבים לעשות שלום ביניכם.
כמה וכמה פעמים רבי שלמה לימד אותנו על הענין "ביניכם." ביני ונין בני ישראל,בין איש לאשתו, בין הורים לילדים,בין שכנים .ביני לבינך.
אז בבקשה! כולנו!תראו.אף פעם לא הייתי גנרל במלחמה, אבל אני מתאר לעצמי שכל גנרל שרואה שני מצבים, האויב שעומד בגבעה במרחק,ובאותו הרגע עומד לקרות התקפה מעמדה קרובה, קודם כל הגנרל חייב לטפל באיום הכי קרוב אליו.
כל כך פשוט לי לחשוב שאפשר לסדר החיים ולתקן הכל מבחוץ. כל כך פשוט לי להאשים את מה שמבחוץ.אבל האמת היא שאני חייב לתקן מבפנים.
אחים ואחיות יקרים, הלב שלי יכול להיות האויב הכי מסוכן שלי.בואו נסיר את כל השנאה מליבנו שחס ושלום יש לנו אחד מול השני. בא נעשה שלום בינינו, ונראה לבורא העולם שאיכפת לנו למרות שיש לנו המון דעות שונות.
אני רוצה לברך אותנו,מהמקום הקטן שלי, עם הכוח,השאיפה, והרצון רק לאהוב אחד את השני ולהיות מוכנים לקבל מתנות מדהימות, אור ושמחה מהקדוש ברוך הוא ואחד מהשני.
